Tithing and God: What Most Christians Miss

What is Tithing, and Why Does It Matter?

A few people have heard the word “Tithe” or “Tithing” but very few understand what it really means, and how it is such a pivotal principle for Christians.

Tithing is a biblical principle where believers return 10% of their gross income to God, typically through their local church where they are a regular member. It’s not just an Old Testament law — it’s a spiritual act of worship and trust. But many Christians misunderstand tithing, either ignoring it altogether or viewing it as a burdensome obligation.

In this article, we will explore what the Bible says about tithing, why it is still relevant today, and how it can transform your financial and spiritual life.

What Does the Bible Say About Tithing and God?

The Bible is clear about the importance of tithing. Here are some key scriptures that explain God’s view on tithing:

1. Tithing is an Act of Worship

📖 Deuteronomy 14:22-23 – “Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year…so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always.”

Tithing teaches us to put God first. It’s not about the money — it’s about our HEARTS.

2. God Promises to Bless Tithers

📖 Malachi 3:10 – “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this…and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”

This is the ONLY place in the Bible where God invites us to test Him. He promises to bless those who faithfully tithe.

3. Jesus Endorses Tithing

📖 Matthew 23:23 – “You give a tenth of your spices…But you have neglected the more important matters of the law — justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former (tithing).”

Jesus affirmed tithing but reminded us that it should be done with the right heart.

Can I Afford to Tithe?

Many Christians hesitate to tithe because they worry about their finances. But the truth is, tithing is about trust, not wealth. Here’s why:

1. Tithing Puts God First in Your Finances

When we tithe, we acknowledge that God is our provider. It shifts our mindset from fear to faith.

2. Tithing Invites Supernatural Provision

People who tithe often experience unexpected financial blessings—raises, promotions, and debt freedom.

3. Tithing Breaks the Spirit of Greed

Giving back to God teaches us contentment and generosity, breaking the power of money over our hearts.

Common Myths About Tithing and God

“Tithing is Just an Old Testament Law”

While tithing was included as part of the Mosaic Law, Abraham tithed over 400 years before the law of Moses (found in Genesis 14:20), and then Jesus affirmed it in the New Testament (Matthew 23:23).

“I Can’t Afford to Tithe”

Tithing isn’t about how much you have left over at the end of the month — it’s about trusting God FIRST with what you have, and putting Him above everything else. When you step out in faith, God provides.

“I’ll Start Tithing When I Have More Money”

If you don’t Tithe when you have little, you won’t tithe when you have much for 2 reasons:

  1. 1. You get good at what you practice – if you practice tithing when you have a small income, as your income grows, your tithe will proportionately do the same. If you haven’t practiced it, as your income grows, the amount that you start to tithe suddenly looks big and greed will kick in.
  2. 2. Lifestyle creep – as our income grows, so do our out-goings. So the lie we tell ourselves that “when I earn more, there will be more left-over” never happens, because our expenses increase as our income does.
  3. Obedience is a choice, and it starts now.

FAQs About Tithing and God: What Most Christians Miss

1. Is Tithing Still Relevant Today?

Yes! Tithing is a biblical principle that teaches trust, obedience, and generosity. It is not just about church support—it’s about your relationship with God.

2. Should I Tithe on Gross or Net Income?

Tithing is about the first and best of what you receive. The Biblical definition of the tithe is on the gross income as an act of faith. Think about it this way – can the tax man bless your finances? If not, why do you give him the first portion of your money? Does God have the power to bless your finances? YES, that’s why He gets the first portion of our finances.

3. What If My Spouse Doesn’t Believe in Tithing?

Pray and seek wisdom. Honor your spouse while remaining faithful to God’s principles. This is something you need to get united on – “A house divided cannot stand”.

4. What If I’m in Debt? Should I Still Tithe?

Tithing should still be a priority because it connects with God’s provision. However, be wise in managing your finances and seek counsel.
